Intsetse FM travel guide. Visitor information checked on 9 October 2026.
Looking for things to do in Mpumalanga? Build your visit around the part of the province you will be staying in. The Panorama Route, Mbombela, the Kruger area and the eastern border region offer different outings. This guide brings together scenic stops, wildlife, gardens, history and adventure, with official links to help you organise a day trip or weekend.
1. Explore the Panorama Route
God’s Window, Bourke’s Luck Potholes and the Three Rondavels are established scenic attractions highlighted by Mpumalanga Tourism. They offer different views and experiences, so pick a few stops instead of trying to visit everything in one rushed day.
Our suggestion is to leave time for each viewpoint and the driving between stops. Check the forecast before setting off, since mist can affect views. Carry drinking water and confirm entry arrangements at the individual attractions.
2. Add a waterfall stop
Lisbon, Berlin, Mac Mac and Lone Creek are among the waterfalls listed by the provincial tourism authority. Choose a stop that fits your route rather than planning a long detour purely for a photograph.
Ask about the current access route and any closures before travelling. Stay within permitted visitor areas and follow signs at viewpoints. The experience can work well as one part of a scenic day, with enough time left for lunch and the return journey.
3. Book a Kruger National Park day visit
A Kruger day trip needs more preparation than an unplanned drive. SANParks’ day-visitor guidance explains visitor limits, advance bookings and gate requirements. Bring the required identification and check the gate times for your chosen date.
Plan around one entrance and a realistic driving route. Budget for the applicable conservation and booking charges, and follow park rules about speed and where you may leave your vehicle. Wildlife sightings vary; give yourself time to enjoy the landscape rather than chasing a guaranteed animal encounter.
4. Walk through the Lowveld National Botanical Garden
In Mbombela, the Lowveld National Botanical Garden offers river scenery, waterfall viewpoints and an African rainforest section. SANBI provides visitor information and garden maps to help you choose a route.
This is an option for a day with a slower pace. Match your walk to your group’s mobility and ask about access to specific areas if needed. Check admission details before leaving and allow time to explore beyond the first viewpoint.
5. Visit Sudwala Caves
The Sudwala operator’s website lists guided cave tours and additional activities, including a zipline and a crystal tour. Confirm which experience you are booking, its requirements and the current price directly with the operator.
A regular cave visit and a specialist activity need different planning. Ask about booking requirements, footwear and suitability for children before paying. Leave space in your itinerary for check-in and the actual tour.
6. Try Graskop Gorge’s forest experience
The Graskop Gorge Lift Company offers a lift into the gorge and forest exploration, alongside separate adventure activities. Its website provides current operating and visitor information.
Choose the activity that suits your group and budget. Confirm ticket inclusions rather than assuming every activity is covered by one admission. If access needs matter, ask about the precise route you want to take, including steps and walkways.
7. Make room for local history
Mpumalanga Tourism’s heritage guide includes Pilgrim’s Rest and the Samora Machel Monument at Mbuzini. These are in different parts of the province, so choose the visit that fits your route.
Give a heritage outing time for reading and reflection. Check opening arrangements before travelling and consider a local guide where available. Ask about the itinerary and fee in advance.
A practical Mpumalanga weekend plan
For a Panorama weekend, consider a scenic day followed by a Graskop activity. For a Mbombela base, consider the botanical garden and a separately planned Kruger day visit. These are itinerary suggestions, not fixed tour packages.
Set a total budget for transport, accommodation, food and admission. Avoid tightly timed bookings in distant towns on the same day. For walking trips, read our Mpumalanga hiking booking guide. For an upcoming music outing, see our 013 SummerBlaze 2026 guide.
