A final score tells listeners who won, but it does not explain the whole experience of a community sporting event. A useful story can also describe the turning point, the preparation or what participants learned. Start with accuracy, then decide which detail makes the account worth hearing.

This is a reporting guide, not coverage of a particular match or a claim that a fixture has taken place.

Confirm the essential facts

Check the team names, competition, venue, date and result with an appropriate official source or organiser. Confirm the spelling of players’ names before using them. If a result is provisional or disputed, explain that status rather than presenting it as final.

Keep your own observations separate from information supplied by someone else. If you were not at the event, do not write as though you personally witnessed a decisive moment.

Choose an angle supported by detail

A story might focus on a team’s preparation, an organiser’s work or a participant trying a sport for the first time. Ask what changed and why it mattered to the people involved. One specific example is more convincing than repeatedly describing an event as historic or unforgettable.

Seek more than one perspective where it will improve the account. A coach and a participant may explain the same moment differently. Quote people accurately and avoid turning a brief comment into a claim they did not make.

Give the listener useful context

Explain unfamiliar competition terms and identify whether you are discussing a school, club or another level of sport. If you mention a future fixture, check the current details and direct listeners to the organiser for updates.

Take particular care before sharing young participants’ identifying information or recordings. Agree on the intended use with the appropriate people before publication.
