Radio presenting is a combination of preparation, listening and clear delivery. You can practise the basics with a phone recorder and a short script before seeking formal opportunities. The aim is to become easier to follow, rather than to imitate another presenter’s voice.

1. Introduce one idea clearly

Choose a familiar subject and explain it in three sentences. Give the listener a reason to care before adding background. Record yourself and check whether the opening makes sense without a picture or written headline beside it.

2. Finish within a set time

Try a thirty-second introduction, then a sixty-second explanation of the same subject. Use a timer. If you run over, remove a secondary point rather than speaking so quickly that the main message becomes unclear.

Repeat the exercise with a different topic. You will begin to notice which phrases add meaning and which only take up time.

3. Listen before the next question

Ask a friend about an interest and prepare three possible questions. During the conversation, add a follow-up based on what they actually say. This helps you practise an interview as a conversation rather than a list you must finish.

4. Prepare names and unfamiliar words

Check pronunciations with the person concerned or a reliable source. Write yourself a simple reminder. If you make a mistake during practice, correct it plainly and continue. Spending the next minute apologising can distract from the guest or subject.

5. Review one habit at a time

Listen back for a single issue: rushed endings, unclear names or repeated filler words. Set one goal for the next recording. Keep an earlier sample so you can compare your progress without expecting every attempt to be perfect.

Listen to the Intsetse FM presenters for examples of different on-air styles. Check the careers page for published opportunities, and treat your practice recordings as learning material rather than official station content.
