UJ’s undergraduate admissions page links to its prospectus and an APS calculator. These are useful starting points for its programmes, but applicants should use each institution’s own published scoring method and subject requirements when comparing universities. A score calculated for one institution should not be treated as universal.

Check points and subjects together

Find the exact qualification in the current prospectus. Write down its stated points requirement and the school subjects and achievement levels it requires. Keep these in separate columns so that an overall score does not hide a subject requirement.

Our suggested approach is to mark each requirement as met, not met or needing clarification. This produces a more honest comparison than adding up points and assuming the total alone decides admission.

Use a worked worksheet, not a guessed rule

List your actual subjects and results. Beside each, record how the institution’s method treats it. If you use an official calculator, save your inputs privately so that you can repeat the calculation after results change.

Do not substitute a remembered conversion from a friend’s application. Where the prospectus distinguishes Mathematics and Mathematical Literacy, read the exact wording for the course you want. Ask the institution about any uncertainty instead of silently assuming equivalence.

Choose a realistic range of options

Compare programmes you would genuinely study, including alternatives that fit your interests and current results. Look at course content and progression as well as entry requirements. An alternative is useful only if you understand what it involves.

Write down why each option suits you and what still needs checking. Published minimum requirements support planning; the institution’s assessment and actual offer determine the outcome of your application.
